Why would I pay money for this?
There are many ways to solve the challenge of storing records in a Kallax shelf. People have used everything from cardboard boxes to weather stripping to pool noodles to make sure their records stay organized and easy to access.
We offer something that is just as functional, less obtrusive, and with simple design flourishes that we think physical media enthusiasts will love. Plus, because they’re not destructive, you don’t have to worry about repurposing or selling your shelves when it’s time for a change.
What are your shipping and return policies?
We are only able to ship within the United States and will not accept any international orders.
The time we need to prepare an order for shipping varies, but we always work to ship items as soon as possible, usually within 1 or 2 business days. We’ll never be able to keep up with Amazon, but we hate waiting as much as you do.
Estimated shipping times:
- USPS First Class Mail: 4-7 business days
- USPS Priority Mail: 2-4 business days
- FedEx 2-Day: 2 business days
- FedEx Standard Overnight: 1 business day
We offer free cancelations for any order that has not entered production or been prepared for shipping. If you want to cancel your order, email us as soon as possible.
If you are unhappy with your order, you can return the items within two weeks of your purchase date. Returns will need to be shipped back to us at your expense. We will refund the cost of all returned items that are undamaged and remain in sellable condition. We will not ship you low quality prints and expect you to pay money for them. That’s just rude.
What if my return is damaged during shipping?
Neither of us control the carriers or the weather. If there is any issue with returned items that were carefully packed, we’ll work it out with you. We want you to be happy with your purchase and the purchase experience so we’re not too worried about it.
What if it’s been longer than 2 weeks since I received my order?
We hope you like it, that you tell your friends how great it is, and that it helps you enjoy your physical media collection even more. But we cannot accept returns outside of the two week return window.
What material do you use for your prints?
We use PLA filament for most parts and have tested our prints to make sure they are as high quality as they are durable.
That does mean that they are not suited for use outdoors and you should keep an eye on how much direct exposure to sunlight they might have. UV light won’t affect PLA prints much, but heat can cause discoloration and warping. That’s also true for records so make sure to keep your records out of the sun too!
Can I order custom colors?
Not at the moment. We’ve limited our color options to those that match the Kallax shelving options that are currently available. We would like to offer customization options in the future, but right now we need to keep our filament supplies under control. If custom colorways are something you're interested in,reach out and let us know!
Why do you only have adhesive options?
Our backspacers are designed specifically for Ikea Kallax shelving, which is great for record storage but internally they have a honeycomb structure that makes it unsuitable for screws. We chose Command™ strips because they suit the purpose and will allow for graceful and simple recovery if the adhesive fails. If your screw fails, the recovery process gets a lot more complicated. Plus, record collections will likely change over time (either growing or shrinking). If you need to repurpose your shelf, all you need to do is pull off the strips and your undamaged shelf is ready for its new use.
Can we get adhesive strips in a different color?
Sadly, not right now. We wanted to make sure spacer removal was easy and that it didn’t leave any residue on the shelf. Command™ Strips are great for that! But we’re only able to get them in white.
If you have a black shelf and the white strips are making you crazy, we tried covering up the visible portion with a black Sharpie marker. It’s not elegant, and it’s tedious, but it works. And this is the back of your shelf that is full of records we’re talking about. Maybe you won’t notice?
What happens if an adhesive strip fails?
We chose Small 3M Command™ Strips so that replacements would be easy to find. Plus, if you decide to use your shelf for another purpose, you can cleanly remove them without leaving any residue or causing any damage.
Will these works on other shelves?
Probably not. Our backspacers are measured to perfectly fit Ikea Kallax and Expedit shelving. These dimensions may not work on other shelving. But, if you have another shelf in mind, let us know! Maybe we can work something out.
My spacer doesn’t fit flush on the sides. How come?
Our backspacers are measured to fit Kallax and Expedit shelves that are set up with the short boards oriented vertically. This helps ensure they are simple to install and that they account for any variability in the dimensions of your shelf. If yours is assembled with the short boards arranged horizontally, the spacer may not fit quite as well (but it should still work).
Also, if the short boards are horizontal, this means that the weight of your records is being supported only by the wooden dowels and have a higher risk of collapsing. We suggest you change the orientation of the shelf so that the load from your records is better distributed. Or, you can increase the strength of your shelf by replacing the wood dowels with metal ones. You could also supplement the vertical support with additional pieces to take some of the load off of the dowels themselves. Here’s a video with some suggestions.
Why is there a seam in the middle?
Our backspacers are all 3D printed and are exceptionally wide for these kinds of parts. We have tested the design to make sure spacers are durable and up to the task and we’ve worked hard to minimize the appearance of the seam. But, the seams are unavoidable with our current equipment. If that bothers you (we get it) then you should definitely consider other options.
How come all of my records are not even?
The size of the sleeves your records come in can be highly variable. Different LPs frequently have different packaging. Special editions and box sets can be drastically different sizes. Make sure you consider the sizes in your collection that need to be accommodated and choose the alignment option that works best for you.
Will this work with box sets?
Most likely yes, but there are some things to consider. Box sets come in lots of different sizes so there is no definitive, universal answer. But, we have a bunch and find that things work out well with the deep or medium mounting options.
If you choose the flush mounting option, that will work great for regular LPs, but a box set may protrude or even extend beyond the shelf itself. Make sure you evaluate which box sets you have and how you want to organize them before mounting your accessories.
And if you choose poorly, we have some good news! Because the adhesive strips can be removed without issue, you can always reattach the backspacer at a different depth if you need to. You’ll need some new Command™ strips though.
Will shelf tags work for my collection if I am not using Kallax shelves?
Yes! Because they have been designed to be compact, they should work on any shelves that are at least4.53 inches (115mm) for our short stems and175mm (6.9 inches) deep for our long stems. Make sure to choose the right size for your shelves when you're ordering.
Is this Kallax-Fi?
John Darko at Darko Audio has a video about Kallax shelving he uses for audio gear. We don’t think our stuff really counts as "Kallax-Fi", but the idea is a great thing to consider when you’re purchasing your gear. And if you’re concerned about sound quality, make sure to look into sound and vibration isolation for your speakers and other audio equipment.
Do you use affiliate links?
Maybe some day but definitely not today. If you see links to any recommendations, it's because we love and use the product. We're music fans first and won't advocate for dubious fads just to get attention or make some money.
Can I store records horizontally?
Definitely not. The weight of the records in the pile will damage them. Always store your records vertically, regardless of the kind of shelf you’re using.
